CMC Markets’ Chief Market Strategist, Michael McCarthy likes Super Retail Group (SUL), partly because despite recent gains its shares are still trading at around 10x next year’s earnings. “One could argue SUL is “supercheap”,” he says.

“It has clear momentum and could be breaking through important resistance around $8. SUL may be one of the winners in an under-loved sector of the market,” he adds.

Michael doesn’t like the goldminer Northern Star (NST). “It is still nearer all-time highs, despite a tumble in gold prices,” he says.

“Talk of potential takeovers in the sector may be blinding investors to the margin compression induced by NST’s newer, higher cost Alaskan Pogo mine.

“The popping of the palladium bubble and a resurgent US dollar could see NST come off sharply,” he adds.
