Whitehaven Coal has acquired more than 90 per cent of Coalworks under a $145.6 million takeover offer.

Whitehaven took control of Coalworks in June after the Coalworks board approved a takeover by its fellow NSW coal miner.

Whitehaven said on Wednesday it holds more than 90 per cent of Coalworks shares, and did not intend to extend its offer beyond the closing time of 1900 AEST on Wednesday.

It will seek compulsory acquisition of all the shares it does not own after the offer closes, Whitehaven said.

Coalworks’ three major assets include coking and thermal coal projects, Ferndale in the Hunter Valley, Vickery South in the Gunnedah Basin and Oakland North in NSW’s south.
