Tiger Airways has been cleared to increase its number of flights in Australia ahead of the busy Christmas travel period.

Singapore-based Tiger received approval from the Civil Aviation Safety Authority of Australia (CASA) late on Tuesday to operate a maximum of 32 flights per day, the company said.

That is up from the 22 flights per day it has been permitted to fly since resuming flights on August 2.

CASA grounded Tiger’s Australian fleet of 10 Airbus A320s on July 2,saying at the time it believed permitting the airline to continue flying posed a serious and imminent risk to air safety.

The approval of more flights was effective immediately.

The airline, which flies out of Melbourne, said its new flight schedule would include two extra daily return services Sydney, and one extra daily service to Perth, Brisbane and the Gold Coast.

Details of the full flight schedule would be released soon, Tiger said.

Earlier this week, the airline’s Australian business reported a $S27.2 million ($A20.70 million) operating loss in the three months to September 30.

Chief executive Chin Yau Seng said the airline needed to add more flights in order to achieve its goal of getting the business back to at least a breakeven level.
