Stocks to watch on the Australian stock exchange on Tuesday, Oct 7:

BHP – BHP BILLITON – down 75.0 cents, or 2.24 per cent, at $32.70

BHP Billiton says it will cut costs at its iron ore mines by 25 per cent but insists the recent price falls do not change its view about healthy long-term demand.

NCM – NEWCREST MINING – down 35 cents, or 3.39 per cent, at $9.96

RRL – REGIS RESOURCES – down 8.5 cents, or 5.3 per cent, at $1.515

Gold mining stocks are suffering heavy falls after the spot price of gold fell below $US1,200 per fine ounce for the first time in 2014.

TLS – TELSTRA – up one cent, or 0.19 per cent at $5.40

Telstra has successfully completed a $1 billion off-market share buy-back.
