Stocks to watch on the Australian stock exchange on Friday, Aug 7:

ANZ – ANZ BANKING GROUP – in a trading halt at $32.58

CBA – COMMONWEALTH BANK – down $2.82, or 3.2 per cent, at $84.55

NAB – NATIONAL AUSTRALIA BANK – down 75 cents, or 2.2 per cent, at $33.59

WBC – WESTPAC – down $1.05, or three per cent, at $33.44

A weaker-than-expected profit from ANZ and its $3 billion capital raising have sparked a massive selloff of shares in the big four banks.

DOW – DOWNER EDI – down 52 cents, or 11.35 per cent, at $4.06

Engineering group Downer EDI is warning of further hits to come as belt tightening in the mining sector contributed to a three per cent fall in annual profit.

KMD – KATHMANDU – up 13.5 cents, or 8.9 per cent, at $1.645

Kathmandu has left the door open for a higher takeover offer after rejecting Kiwi retailer Briscoe’s bid of at least $AUD318 million.

SGH – SLATER AND GORDON – down 10 cents, or 3.1 per cent, at $3.17

Shares in Slater and Gordon have retraced much of their lost ground after they plunged amid mounting concerns over the law firm’s UK business.
