ARI – ARRIUM – up 4.5 cents, or 5.5 per cent, at 87 cents

The plunging value of the Australian dollar is great news for Arrium, with every one cent fall worth $10 million to $12 million in before tax profit for its struggling steel business.

CSR – CSR – up two cents at $2.29

Building products maker CSR says it expects construction of new houses to improve in the months ahead, and a better performance from its glass business.

NCM – NEWCREST MINING – up $1.15, or 11.6 per cent, at $11.10

Embattled gold miner Newcrest has told workers at its Telfer mine in Western Australia that some of them will lose their jobs in the next six to 12 months.
