Whitehaven Coal shares have gained almost 10 per cent after conditional environmental approval was granted for its Maules Creek mine in NSW.

Commonwealth Bank is likely to post a profit of about $3.7 billion when it unveils its accounts for the first half of the financial year on Wednesday.
