Australian engineering firms Leighton and John Holland have been awarded another contract to build part of a Singapore mass transit rail line.

The $329 million contract to build a section of the 30 kilometre Thomson Line is the joint venture’s second civil engineering project in Singapore since it scored a $130 million contract in 2011.

The latest contract is to build Springleaf station and a two-kilometre section of twin, bored tunnels – part of the 30km Thomson line railway consisting of 22 stations and six interchange stations.

Construction work is expected to begin immediately and be completed by 2020.

Leighton Asia, India and Offshore managing director Ian Edwards said the Australian construction companies had a strong relationship with the Singapore government’s Land Transport Authority.

“The award is indicative of our proven track record for delivering projects to the highest standard,” he said in a statement.

Contracts to build the Thomson Line have also been awarded to companies from China and South Korea.
