Talks for the sale of liquefied natural gas (LNG) from the $29 billion Wheatstone project in Western Australia are under way, operator Chevron says.

Chevron Australia general manager of the Wheatstone project Brian Smith told a function in Perth on Tuesday that more than 60 per cent of the gas had already been committed for sale to Japanese companies, but discussions continued for the sale of the remainder.

Mr Smith did not say who the talks were being held with.

Chevron recently began construction of the project, in which the US oil and gas giant holds about 73 per cent.

Two LNG processing “trains” are being built along with a domestic gas plant.

Mr Smith said Chevron hoped to sell 80 per cent of the gas from Wheatstone under contracts.

Talks were progressing well and announcements on the new deals we expected in coming months, he said.
