BlueScope Steel has received approval to buy one of its competitors in the building products market.

The Australian Competition and Consumer Commission (ACCC) has decided not to oppose BlueScope’s purchase of Fielders Australia, which competes against BlueScope’s Lysaght business in making products used by builders, roof installers and shed makers.

BlueScope struck a deal in August 2013 to buy Fielders and another of Hills’ steel businesses, Orrcon, for $87.5 million.

The Orrcon purchase has already been completed.

The ACCC said BlueScope’s market power in the steel building products market would not be changed by the acquisition of Fielders.

Customers would still have the choice of other suppliers and alternative materials, the ACCC said.
