The share market has closed lower as banks gave back some of the significant gains made on Thursday.

At the close on Friday, the benchmark S&P/ASX200 index was down 35.7 points, or 0.61 per cent, at 5,841.5, while the broader All Ordinaries index was down 28 points, or 0.48 per cent, at 5,788, according to preliminary figures.

On the ASX 24, the March share price index futures contract was 33 points lower at 5,813, with 34,486 contracts traded.
