The Australian share market has closed flat, with losses among some of the major banks weighing on sentiment.

At the close on Tuesday, the benchmark S&P/ASX200 index was 0.1 of a point lower at 5,511.3, based on provisional data.

The broader All Ordinaries index was also down 0.1 of point to 5,495.7.

On the ASX 24, the September share price index futures contract was eight points weaker at 5,463, with 20,846 contracts traded.
