The ‘cut loss’ principle

The sudden and large price drops of the two stocks GEM and RFG recently must have ‘gapped’ the ‘normal’ stop loss levels of most holders.

Whilst the ‘cut loss’ principle should sensibly and painfully apply, it would be enlightening to know what the professional investors and institutions do when caught in this situation.

Is it an option to wait for a clear sign of reversal – backed by changes to fundamentals – to average down (bad word) and hope to reduce the recovery time?

Thank you.

G8 Education – Hot or Not?

What is your current view on G8 Education (GEM)?
It is trading near some analysts calculation of fair value, but I am concerned that another profit downgrade will send the price tumbling again.

Are there many barriers to enter into the childcare business?

If an oversupply of childcare places has been caused because of low barriers to entry into the industry then I suppose this situation could go on for some time, and it may be time to exit!

Thanks.

Hi Paul,

You have indicated that the Energy sector is one of your more preferred sectors and that Origin is not necessarily one of your favourites.

Which stocks do you prefer?

Many Thanks.

Pengana International Equities

One impact on an LIC’s share price may be dilution by option exercise. According to PIA’s latest Appendix 3B PIA has 244,940,649 FPO shares, and PIAO has 244,525,379 options.

Is this a massive paper overhang subduing share price, or a ~50% potential dilution, or not a reasonable concern?

Santos – Hold or Sell?

In my portfolio I am holding a large number of Santos shares and at present am only a couple of hundred dollars in the red after being thousands behind. Seeing as Santos no longer pay a dividend would it be wise to sell at current levels and invest elsewhere?

Thank you.
