BHP Billiton

My wife and I have BHP Billiton shares on our personal names and would like to transfer these to our SMSF as an off-market transfer. We understand this will trigger a capital gains/loss that has to be declared in our income returns.

Some shares were received as a bonus issue when BHP merged with Billiton back in 2001. Would you please let us know how we can get the value for the issue price? We have records of the correspondence during the merger and cannot find this information except to confirm that we have received 1.0651 additional bonus shares for every BHP share held.

Bellamy’s (BAL)

I bought into BAL 2 months ago at $10 each, with a PE around 150! What a roller coaster. I’d like your opinion please on the stock.

ETFs

I have bought ETFs such as VTS and VEU, etc., as part of diversification to acquire overseas shares.

Is it a GIVEN that SMSFs will have to pay 15% non-resident withholding tax (despite completing an W-8BEN form). Are there alternatives to invest in US equities (Managed funds, ETFs etc.) that will not incur this 15% tax directly or indirectly?

Alcoa (AAI)

I see Alcoa CDI’s (AAI) are listed on the ASX, but are not very liquid and don’t seem to trade all that often, just wondering why that would be given the size of Alcoa?

With Alcoa splitting, will the old Alcoa and the new company still be listed in Australia?

Bare trusts

Our special purpose corporate trustee holds real estate for our super fund. The titles are in the name of the trustee and no money is owed on the properties. Do we still need to set up bare trust?
