The share market has rallied in late trade to close higher and within sight of the benchmark 6,000 point level.

At 1615 AEST on Friday, the benchmark S&P/ASX200 index was up 36.2 points, or 0.61 per cent, at 5,968.4, while the broader All Ordinaries index was up 33.9 points, or 0.57 per cent, at 5,935.4.

On the ASX 24, the June share price index futures contract was up 24 points at 5,960, with 16,022 contracts traded.
