Shareholders give the green light to Viterra takeover

Shareholders have approved the takeover of agribusiness Viterra, which has operations in Australia, by global commodities giant Glencore.

Shareholders met in Canada and voted overwhelmingly in favour of the $C6.1 billion ($A6.07 billion) takeover.

A final order from a court in Ontario is expected in the coming days, and other regulatory approvals are also required.

ASX-listed Viterra expects the transaction to be completed by the end of July.

Viterra, a Canadian food products business, in 2009 took ownership of ABB Grain’s grain handling and marketing, agri-products and malt manufacturing operations in Australia.

It employs more than 1,000 permanent staff in Western Australia, South Australia, Tasmania, Victoria, NSW and Queensland.

Glencore intends to sell the majority of Viterra’s agri-products business, including the Australian retail operations, to Canadian agribusiness Agrium.

But there are no plans for changes to be made in the Australian operations of Viterra, Glencore has said.
