Optus appoints new COO

Optus has appointed the former head of British mobile phone operator Hutchison Three as its chief operating officer in Australia.

Kevin Russell was credited with turning around the Hutchison Three business during his five years with its leadership team, including a stint as chief operating officer.

In his new role, Mr Russell will run the daily operations of Optus’ mass market division and report to chief executive Paul O’Sullivan.

“I’m returning to Australia at a very exciting time in the telecoms industry with the roll-out of 4G and the National Broadband Network both gathering pace,” Mr Russell said.

Before joining Hutchison Three UK, Mr Russell was chief executive of Hutchison Telecoms Australia and led the roll-out of Australia’s first 3G network.
